Just off the easel…

Resistance is a metaphor for illumination.

Inspired by the compelling draw of light, this painting conveys a radiant glow—a symbol of awakening, beauty, and enlightenment. Across cultures and spiritual traditions, light has long been regarded as a force of wisdom, clarity, and transcendence. Warm monochromatic tones and whites create depth and movement, while hints of gold foil and paint emerge through shifting textures, evoking the possibility and the power of expanding awareness.

In a time when being “woke” is politicized and enlightenment is ridiculed, Resistance stands as a visual affirmation that seeking truth, justice, and equality is not a weakness but a strength. The light in this painting serves as both a beacon and a call—to resist darkness, division, and complacency, and to move toward empathy, understanding, and hope.

About this series:

In the wake of election results that left me disheartened and deeply concerned for the future rights of marginalized groups, I turned to art as a source of solace. This dark period fueled my creativity, compelling me to transform frustration and uncertainty into beauty.

I created a series of shadow boxes as intimate compositions built from layers of found and painted papers. Their predominantly monochromatic palettes and rich textures invite a closer look at what might otherwise be overlooked. Inspired by long walks in nature—the delicate strength of a leaf, the play of light and shadow, the weathered texture of bark—I explore how resilience and beauty can emerge from adversity.

This work reflects my ongoing concerns and hopes for human rights and my belief in the enduring power of creativity. Like the women whose stories inspire me, these pieces assert that strength often lies beneath the surface. Through these works, I aim to reclaim power and hope.

Ultimately, this series is a testament to the enduring strength of women and a reminder that, even in challenging times, the act of creation is an act of resilience, connection, and hope.
